During the last few years the ever-increasing spread of Biobuilding has generated strong interest in a very ancient construction technique that uses unfired earth: this is Pisé, which utilises locally sourced, readily available low-moisture rammed earth, compacted layer by layer inside formwork. The resulting walls are massive and may be as much as 50 cm thick. Moreover, the use of different earths creates layers of colour visible to the naked eye, giving rise to a tasteful natural colour scheme.
This ancient but still current building technique has been reinterpreted in the new Bioterre collection of porcelain stoneware floor and wall tiles by Ceramica del Conca: surfaces with a natural, warm look, with all the simplicity of raw earth itself. The colour shades – Calce, Soia, Argilla, Terra, Artico and Amla – are delicate, to establish a tasteful balance in interiors and to combine attractively with materials with a brighter appearance, such as varieties of marble and wood, and brick or majolica tiles.
The Bioterre collection also features two decorative surfaces: Stratum, in 60x120 cm size, is an exact representation of the Pisé technique – unfired earth rammed into formwork, creating an attractive mix of natural hues. The texture accentuates the earth’s natural grain for an even more realistic effect. The decor is produced in 2 colour versions, one warmer – Stratum Argilla – and one in cool shades – Stratum Artico.
The other decor, Shapes, is a wallpaper effect with flowing abstract forms. Designed for use on both floors, in the 120x120 cm size, and walls, in the 60x120 cm size, it is offered in the same two versions, Shapes Argilla and Shapes Artico, with warmer and cooler looks respectively.
